Guy Needler, a 5th Dan (So Hombu) Aikido instructor with 28 years

experience, originally opened Wa Shin Kan Aikido dojo (then called Tanworth Aikikai) at Tanworth-in-Arden in January 2002 and moved to Ullenhall  during July 2004. It has two 1½ hour classes. Monday and Wednesday evenings starting from 7.30pm at Ullenhall Village Hall.

Guy is a member, Fukushidoin (junior national coach), General Secretary of the United Kingdom Aikikai (UKA) and is also a British Aikido Board (BAB) Senior Coach. The UKA is a member of the International Aikido Federation  (IAF) and British Aikido Board (BAB)

Wa Shin Kan Dojo at Ullenhall introduces Aikido to the areas of south Birmingham, including Kings Heath, north Redditch, Studley, Henley-in-Arden, Earlswood, Hollywood and Hockley Heath. It is the first Traditional Aikido dojo in this area. The club caters for students from novice level or that have experience right up to Dan grade (Black belt level). Students from 14 years old are accepted for instruction.

The grades issued by the club are through the governing body, the UKA, and are all internationally recognised, with the Dan grade certificates being issued by Japan.

The student can be expected to be taught all aspects of Aikido including the use of weapons such as Bokken (wooden sword), Jo (a 4 ft stick) and Tanto (Knife) as well as the empty hand techniques of Aikido which are martial arts in their own right. Gradings are usually available every 3-4 months and can be taken (depending upon the individuals progress) by all eligible students. These gradings can be taken either at Wa Shin Kan or at the dojo at Ren Shin Kan, the UKA “house” that Wa Shin Kan is affiliated to the UKA through. A students progression through the grades is purely individual so each student is taught and encouraged individually with out comparison to other students.

The UKA also run a number of national courses each year including a summer school at Harper Adams Agricultural collage at Newport Shropshire. These courses, run by both Japanese and UKA principal instructors, will be open to all the students at Wa Shin Kan.

The main goal of Wa Shin Kan is to promote a strong community spirit through training Aikido whilst increasing an individuals fitness / joint movement and ability to defend themselves.

The name Wa Shin Kan was given to the Dojo by Tani-San, manager of the International Aikikai Department, International Aikido Headquarters at Hombu Dojo, Japan, in March 2006.  The English translation of Wa Shin Kan  is “The House of the Peaceful Heart”.
